David Campton See play(s)
David Campton was a prolific dramatist who wrote for the stage, screen, and radio for thirty-five years, completing over 120 plays. He was one of the first British dramatists to write in the style of the Theatre of the Absurd. Campton was born in Leicester, England, on May 2, 1924. His first attempts at writing plays were staged by the Leicester Drama Society and the Vaughan Players and he was given to occasional diversions into acting and directing. In 1958 he received an arts council bursary for playwriting and continued to write throughout his life. He wrote more than 100 one-act and twenty full-length plays, seven of which are published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc. Some of Campton’s titles are still regularly performed in schools and festivals worldwide today. He also had plays broadcast on local and national radio. Campton was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Leicester in January 2006 and died in Leicester on September 9 of that year, survived by his wife, Sylvia.
